“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” It is not every day that we have the opportunity to combine learning, growing, challenges and humor all in one. As the European Vice President & General Manager of a division of one of the leading international media companies I had the privilege of working with Régine de Wit as our legal council to ensure the smooth and timely closure of the Dutch subsidiary office in Utrecht, while maintaining business as usual and ensuring a smooth transition to a UK-based office. Closing an office is not fun. Telling people they will be made redundant requires tact, understanding and clear language. I needed someone that could provide me with the legal guidance to ensure I would be able to address the issues of an ‘uncommon’ group of 16 nationalities from 4 continents with a limited understanding of the Dutch language and law. This required careful handholding of staff, documentation and precision handling. This closure proved to offer many daunting tasks, on all levels. One of the most challenging was finding a way to cut through Régine’ seriousness and make her smile (my daily goal)! As soon as the planning for the closure of the office commenced, I immediately contacted Régine, as she was recommended to me by my Corporate Attorney when I had worked at the European Headquarters for a Software Publisher. Upon speaking to her, together with my HR director, we quickly decided that she would be a good match and her skills would provide unique advantages to help us achieve our goals considering the tight time frame and multi-cultural requirements (our parent company was US based and we were merging our operations in the UK). Régine and I quickly established a fantastic working relationship and her support to both myself and our HR director was crucial to the success of our project. She was effective, knowledgeable, down to earth and delivered on what we needed. Looking back, I could say Régine has an excellent skill set , first and foremost from a legal perspective or I could emphasize that she clearly understands the need for political correctness in working with diverse cultures or perhaps her knowledge of working with the American and British corporate world and her ability to successfully navigate through the unique and varying legalities we faced………..I could and can say all of these things about Regine, but if I was to use just one word that describes Régine: it would be Focus. Through all the challenges of an office closure over those six months it remained until the end: business as usual. And that was good, the company continued to deliver to the customers, no disruption was noticed, and the team that had to say farewell to their job, their collegues and friends stayed motived to work until the very last day. I guess that was also part of Régine’s influence as after all – all of this is ‘business as usual’ for her. And for me, in teaming up with Régine I absolutely did have the opportunity to combine learning, growing, challenges and humor all in one. And I’m very thankful for that.
